Dear Casio VZ synth owner, Thanks for downloading Livewire Audio's sounds for the Casio VZ-1 and VZ-10M synthesizers. Livewire has programmed a variety of sounds, uploaded this sound set, prepared this document, and extensively tested the sounds with your synth, all at no charge. All we ask is that, if you like the sounds, you send in payment for the full soundbank, If you are using an IBM-PC compatible computer, you MUST have a MIDI interface that is compatible with the industry-standard Roland MPU-401 MIDI interface to load these sounds. We have had much success with the MIDI Quest boards, which are a heck of a lot cheaper than Roland's, and more compact to boot! Most non-standard MIDI interfaces (such as the Key external) and some game boards will not work. You may be able to use a Windows MIDI dumper program (if your MIDI card provides a Windows driver) to load these sounds. However, we cannot guarantee these sounds will load unless you use a genuine MPU-401 compatible MIDI card. Apple Macintosh and Atari ST users can use any normal MIDI interface to load these sounds. The enclosed soundbank contains 10 sounds for your synth. If you like them, send in a check or money order for $10, and you will receive the full set of sounds, plus a copy of the original factory sounds, the latest version of a patch loader program, and a complete hardcopy list of the sounds. There are 64 patches and 64 operation memories in the full patch set - not a bad deal for $10! These sound patches may be freely uploaded onto any public or private BBS, as long as this text file accompanies the sound set. These sound patches are copyright 1994 by Mick Seeley for Livewire Audio. All rights are reserved, etc. REQUIRED PROGRAMS TO LOAD OUR SOUNDS To load the enclosed sounds, you must have a program that can load standard MIDIEX files. For the IBM, MIDIEX is the usual loader program. For the few synths that won't take to MIDIEX, we use QS.EXE. Windows users can use WSYSEX.EXE. Mac users should use MIDIEX-MAC. Atari ST users can use either MIDISAVE.TOS, or the Mini-Dumpstor desk accessory. All of these programs are included FREE on our shareware disk, when you send in your payment. SETTING UP THE SYNTH If you own the Casio PG-380 MIDI guitar, please consult your owner's manual, because - to be perfectly frank - we don't have any idea how the heck our sounds will work with your guitar! To load the VZ-1 and VZ-10M, first make sure your synth has MIDI in & out connected to the computer. Turn your VZ on after turning the computer on. Press the "menu3" button twice, and go to screen 1. Disable the internal write-protect by pressing "no". Press "menu3" again, and press "yes" until you reach screen3. Press "menu3" then the cursor key to reach MIDI receive channel, which should be set to 1. Press "menu3" again, and press "yes" until you reach screen 4. Press "menu3" again, then use the cursor key to reach MIDI system exclusive, which should be enabled (on). Finally, prepare the VZ for bulk dump by pressing "menu3", and then "no" until you reach screen2. Press "menu3" and set the parameters for "load", "MIDI", and either "opmem", "voice", or "vc+op", depending on which type of data you are loading (see your specific computer instructions for details). Leave the cursor at the bottom of this part of the screen (the bottom line you should be on says "execute=yes?". This way you will be ready to load our sounds by pressing "yes" on the VZ when you are ready. Consult your VZ manual (pg. 72-75) for more details if you not understand what to do. Before loading, you may want to save any internal patches to disk first. Your sounds WILL be erased by loading our sounds! If you are only using the factory sounds we already saved them for you. Follow the directions below for your particular computer. LOADING ATARI ST DISKS MIDISAVE.TOS can load sounds saved my MIDIEX on an IBM PC system, as well as sounds saved by MIDIEX_MAC on a Mac computer. It requires only a MIDI keyboard capable of initiating a MIDI data transfer from it's own front panel, and a couple of MIDI cables to connect to the computer. To load sounds, first copy the soundbank file to the same disk (or disk directory) as MIDISAVE. Then run MIDISAVE by simply double-clicking the left mouse button on MIDISAVE. A list of options will appear - follow the onscreen directions. The files on disk are LW_DEMO.VZ and CASIO.VZ (the original Casio VZ internal sounds). LOADING IBM PC DISKS Type MIDIEX and press ENTER. MIDIEX is a simple MIDI patch librarian. After loading it will give you a choice of either T (transmit), R (receive), F (to list files) or escape to quit. Type T and then enter LW_DEMO.VZ (and press ENTER). Our sounds (both voices & operation memories) will load into PC memory. Now if you have set the VZ up correctly (for VC+OP receive, execute=yes?)) you should be able to press "yes" on the VZ, and the display will say "executing". Press any key to send the file to your synth's internal memory. You can repeat the procedure with the CASIO.VZ file (the original Casio VZ internal sounds). Windows users may want to try "WSYSEX.EXE" also included on the disk to load our sounds. This public domain Windows program has not been tested by us, and is not guaranteed to load our sounds. LOADING APPLE MACINTOSH DISKS Double-click the mouse on the MIDIEX_Mac file. Click the mouse to clear the screen, and an empty MIDIEX window will appear. Click once on the top "empty" bank to select it (the bank will now be dark, meaning you have selected it). Move the mouse pointer up to the "Files" menu, and select "open". Load the "Livewire VZ demo" file by double-clicking on it. Now if you have set the VZ up correctly (for voice loading) you should be able to just press "yes" on the VZ, and the display will say "executing". Press command-D, or select "send dump" from the MIDIEX pull-down menu. The file will load into the VZ memory. Now click once on the empty bank beneath the one you just used to select it. Open the "Livewire VZ opmem" file as described previously. Set up the VZ again (this time to receive an OPMEM MIDI dump) and press "yes" to start executing. Send the sounds from the Mac by pressing command-D or use the MIDIEX menu. The original Casio internal memory sounds are also on disk as "Casio VZ voices" and "Casio VZ Opmem". See the Teachtext file on disk for more complete information on MIDIEX-MAC. TROUBLESHOOTING Can't get your sounds to load correctly?
